Butterfly

Performed by Kelly Prescott

“This song is dedicated to the butterfly in all of us … especially the residents of Saint Vincent Hospital, and my inspiration, Cassandra Umbach” -- Raymond Stone.

Butterfly has graciously been made available for the OFCP to distribute its message of hope for people who dream of being freed from their physical disabilities like a caterpillar transforms into a butterfly.

Co-writer Raymond Stone drew initial inspiration for the song from Cassandra who is legally blind, has kidney and liver problems as well as CP. Despite these difficulties she remains positive and has a personality that captivates everyone who meets her.

“I figure in my situation I can still offer some inspiration, it might help inspire other people to do the same,” said Cassandra. And Cassandra leads by example: she is a graduate of Ottawa's Canterbury High School Arts and Music program. Only 25 students are accepted into this prestigious program each year. Cassandra has also been an activist for Amnesty International and hopes to continue her studies to become a counselor to people with similar disabilities.

She won a $5,000 scholarship and the Wayne and Walter Gretzky Award, given each year to five visually impaired persons for their essays on personal achievement. With all her accomplishments, it is easy to understand how she came to be the inspiration for Butterfly. So what was Cassandra's impression of the song? “I can't believe how well he was able to put into words what I've tried so valiantly to put into action. It really got to my heart, because one of my main philosophies in life is to take each day as it comes, and just appreciate the miracles that they bring. Because when you are in a situation like mine you never know what tomorrow’s going to bring.”

Raymond Stone, an accomplished writer of books, poetry, and songs, collaborated with music composer Barry Brown and with Juno-award-winning producer Randall Prescott on Butterfly. Vocals performed by Randall’s daughter Kelly.

Lyrics:

If I could be a butterfly, oh so pretty and so free,

I'd spread my wings up to the sky and see what I could see.

I'd feel the breeze lift up my wings and take me to the sky.

I'd taste the rain and feel the sun, and fly ... oh yes I'd fly.

If I could be a butterfly, shimmering in the sun,

I'd glide above and watch all of the children having fun.

I'd ride the wind and let these wings take me up on high,

I'd touch the clouds and feel the joy, and fly ... oh yes I'd fly.

But I am not a butterfly, it's just a lovely dream,

And flying free up to the sky will never ever be.

But dreams can be a wond'rous thing that sometimes gives us the strength

To embrace each new day and the miracles that come our way.

If I could be a butterfly, so pretty and so free,

I'd spread my wings up to the sky and see what I could see.

I'd let my wings carry me up into the sky.

I'd taste the rain and feel the sun and fly.

Oh dreams can be a wond'rous thing that sometimes can come true.

Yes I can be a butterfly and fly … and all because of you.
